Looting and Finding
Hurricane Katrina has quickly crept into the daily discussions of everyday life. Although this natural disaster was extremely tragic, it seems to me that the media tends to over-exaggerate the situation at hand. Not by the pictures that are shown but by the terms that they loosely use to describe the people who were affected by the hurricane. Often, they are reffered to as "refugees." Now correct me if I'm wrong, but arent refugees people who flee their native country due to wart, political oppression and whatnot? That's what I was taught. Aren't the people of New Orleans citizens of the US?
It also bothers me that even in a time of tragedy, some people still judge the victimized people by race. I recently read two articles about the disaster and its effects and it one article there is a picture of a black man with a bag of food, and the caption describes him as "looting food from the grocery store." In the next article, there is a white couple, with bags of food, and the caption describes them as "finding food from the grocery store." These depictions are unfair whether the journalist was aware of his/her actions or not. I just think that some of the aspects of Katrina are being blown out of proportion.
